Growing up, I was always told my dad was older than most parents. But I never saw it as a bad thing—in fact, it meant he was always there for me. From introducing me to golf at 3 years old to teaching hundreds of students through his driving school (including me, his very last student), my dad, Tony, has always been more than a father—he’s been my biggest mentor and role model.

At 75, Tony lived an incredibly healthy lifestyle. He never smoked or drank, and he stayed active with golf and pickleball. We thought he would have many more years with us. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but doctors told us it was a small case and not to worry. Just a couple months ago, everything changed. Tony began experiencing back pain and abdominal tenderness. After scans, we were devastated to learn the cancer had spread to his bones, brain, and lungs.

His condition has worsened rapidly—he now struggles to eat, drink, or move without assistance. He’s currently in the hospital receiving IVs and pain relief, but doctors have told us he may only have weeks left. Seeing him go from living each day normally to now fighting to get through each hour has been heartbreaking for our entire family and friends.

During this time, my mom, Shella, has been at his side in the hospital every day, unable to work while managing all of Tony’s care. On top of the emotional toll, she is worried with financial stress. While our family had already planned on selling the house in the near future, right now she is most worried about how to cover expenses and provide for our family as she cares for Tony.
