Tony Sweigart and his family's lives changed overnight when he became very ill. It started with a cold. The next day he was taken to the hospital by ambulance because of low blood pressure and leg pain. Within 24 hours he is was the ICU on life support, and not expected to make it through the night. Tony was healthy until this moment. He had never been sick. The doctors didn't know what was wrong. Tony was transferred to another hospital. In the helicopter, during transport, his heart stopped. He had become septic. No one knew where the infection was coming from. By some miracle he made it to the new hospital where he was seen my many specialists. He spent 17 days in the ICU in critical condition. Tony gained 65 pounds in only days due to fluid build up. His arms and legs were dangerously tight. Doctors had to slice open the entire length of his arms and legs to relieve the pressure. For weeks Tony had 10 open wounds that had to be packed and treated. Then his kidneys failed requiring him to have dialysis. Tony has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Capillary Leak Syndrome. There have only been 150 cases diagnosed world wide. As Tony became more stable he was moved to the intermediate unit where he stayed 34 more days. Tony has endured a cardiac arrest, 17 surgeries and right lower leg amputation and ongoing bouts of severe depression. He is now in rehab but has a long road ahead. Anything you can donate will help the family with medical costs and other expenses while Tony is unable to work.
