From the moment Tonio came to this country, he has been helping people. He has helped many friends and family get jobs, lent money, sponsored the bar at many weddings and given me the most precious gift of all, our daughter Meli. Antonio Guevara, the youngest of nine children, was born in La Loma de San Rafael, GTO, Mexico on Jan. 17, 1961 (he just turned 60!!). He was the favorite of everyone growing up and as such became quite the charmer (and spoiled!)! He decided to come to the US for the fun of it and crossed over the border the first time in the early 1980’s. He made his way to Oakland and began working in a Straw Hat pizza on 65th and Telegraph. His boss was Greek, so Tonio learned to speak Greek before he learned English.
Eventually he got a job at Zachary’s pizza in 1985 and met Sue there. Sue and Tonio were together for 23 years and created the most delightful human being on the planet, Meli. Meli is the light of her daddy’s eye! Although Sue and Tonio are no longer married, he is still part of her large family, living in her step father JB’s, house in Berkeley (affectionately known at the Bull Pen), coming to holiday dinners and parties and putting the happy in JB’s daily Happy Hour (now moved to the porch due to COVID!).
Again, Tonio has helped so many people both here in the East Bay (especially Richmond or as JB calls it “La Loma del Norte”). His work with a bartender caterer means that he has been called on to sponsor the bar at many a wedding, Quinceañera and baptism. Since his work is based around large events he has been out of work for the better part of this year, getting by on unemployment and unable to find a new job as he has been struggling with these health issues. Any amount you’re able to give would go a long way for his recovery and day to day needs!
He is a wonderful friend, brother, godfather and most of all father to Meli! Please help support Tonio during this rough time!
