On Saturday, August 23, Tommy Smith and his girlfriend Rhonda were in a catastrophic motorcycle accident that resulted in both having their left legs amputated from the serious impact, and other serious injuries. Rhonda, among other things, suffered a broken pelvis and serious injuries to her bladder, that is now having to be reconstructed. Tommy cracked numerous ribs on his left side, had his left ring finger amputated from the top knuckle, left middle finger broken and now has metal wires and screws in attempts to heal, and damage to the left side of his face including broken bones and teeth, with facial surgery.
The accident occurred when the driver of an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck them as Tommy attempted to try and avoid the collision. The impact shot the bike, and flew them off the road.
Tommy and Rhonda are a strong, family-centered couple with lots of love in their lives and lots of responsibilities they’ve willingly embraced as part of their active, fully involved lives. But they now face a host of unexpected challenges as they begin physical rehab and a long road to recovery. At the same time, they face a mountain of medical, legal, and insurance issues. Doctors tell Rhonda she will face two years of ongoing, time-consuming physical rehabilitation. Tommy awaits similar challenges with his recovery while needing to manage his contracting business.
As those who know them will attest, Rhonda and Tommy welcome hard work and have overcome all the challenges life has thrown at them. They will deal with what’s ahead of them in the same spirit with which they’ve always lived, with positive energy, humor, joy, and love. They will need our prayers and our help to get through this.
Rhonda takes full-time care of her two grandchildren, who are in her custody. Those acquainted with Tommy’s formidable daughters, Abby and Izzy, know he’s helped raise two strong, young, accomplished women. Upon learning of the accident, both went right to work doing everything within their power for Tommy and Rhonda.
As self-reliant individuals, Rhonda and Tommy aren’t accustomed to asking for help, but right now they need assistance from their large network of friends. In addition to the laborious process of recovery, they will need to stay on top of their individual finances while confronting a myriad of new obligations and activities, while still paying bills, supporting their children, and maintaining their own homes. On top of all this, they will now be paying legal and medical fees, figuring out mobility and transportation while persevering through the endless meetings, paperwork, and phone calls ahead of them.
Their admirable spirits and can-do attitudes will carry both of them through all they face, but they can’t get through this on their own. Any donation, big or small, will help them in this demanding and complex period as they go about rebuilding their lives.
