On November 11, 2023, Tom & Cathy Magee's lives changed forever. Tom Magee had a hemorrhagic stroke 18 months ago. Hemorrhagic stroke has a 40% to 50% death rate in the first 30 days after the event, which is double the rate of ischemic stroke.
By the grace of God and both Cathy and Tom's determination, Tom has been fighting to regain some basic normal abilities. A recent neurologic re-evaluation determined that he will not regain further mobility or function.
As business owners, his wife & he are struggling to keep the business operational for many reasons, among which, it requires extensive physical activity.
In their research to find hope & help, they came across Perispinal etanercept (PSE) treatment, which is an experimental approach for stroke recovery that involves injecting etanercept into the spine to reduce inflammation in the brain. Some studies suggest it may lead to rapid improvements in neurological functions and pain relief. Although used very successfully elsewhere in the world, PSE is not FDA approved here in the United States, so neither insurance nor Medicare will cover the expense.
Following the initial consultation by the only facility in the US doing the procedure, they were advised that it will likely take more than one session. Obviously, this is an expensive procedure, but one that may be life changing, not only for Tom & Cathy, but potentially for so many additional stroke patients. Please help me help them try to regain their lives!
