Tom Brodie was recently diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a progressive disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for muscle movement. This diagnosis has been heartbreaking for Tom, Terrie, and their children, Riley and Matthew, as they begin to face the emotional and physical challenges ahead. Tom is one of those people who makes life better just by being around. He is kind, steady, and full of quiet strength—a person who brings people closer and reminds us that community is built through genuine connection. Terrie describes him as a curious soul, a dog lover, a loyal friend, and a fun-loving guy who can get lost for hours in a good book, a map, or cheering on his favorite sports teams. Together, Terrie and Tom have built a warm, loving home with their two amazing children, Riley and Matthew, who are the center of their world.

As they navigate this difficult journey, our community of friends, family, former students, neighbors, and colleagues has the opportunity to rally around them.
