Hola! My name is Tiger Lily Locheart. I have been studying Spanish for around five years now. Knowing Spanish has been a very rewarding skill I have had the privilege to learn. Living in the United States, however, I’m only able to put it to use occasionally. This, along with a desire for travel and independence has led me to look into different traveling programs for my Junior year of high school. My family and I decided the Where There Be Dragons program was a good fit. I will be traveling to Bolivia and Peru for three months from February 11 to May 1st, 2023. On this trip, I will be honing in on my trekking and hiking skills as we travel through both The Andes mountains and The Amazon jungle. I will learn about the many Quechua communities we pass through and dive into understanding and learning about their culture, history, and ways of living. We will learn about environmental issues, resource issues, and mining activityś impact on the traditional production of quinoa. I will stay with a family for a month during this time which will give me a chance to work on my Spanish and get an insight into their way of life. Course work during this month will include intensive Spanish instruction, an independent study led by a community member such as medicinal plants and healing, socio-political issues, Andean music, dance, etc. If you would like to read the whole itinerary I will post a link at the bottom of this page. Throughout this whole trip, I will be keeping a daily journal and doing my own independent study for a language arts credit. I will be graded by one of my instructors on weekly prompts; which will be based on my observations, growth, and experiences (also posted at the bottom.)

In terms of preparing, this summer I will be working 4-5 days a week at a local restaurant, and I will make approximately $5,000-$6,000 dollars. This will cover airfare, insurance, supplies, spending money, and part of my tuition. I will be applying for a scholarship that Where There Be Dragons offers but it isn’t guaranteed that I will receive financial aid. That is where you come in. My parents will be contributing by matching the amount of money I am able to earn. The full tuition is due 90 days before February 11. This means I will need all of the money by November 13. I will also be taking summer classes to have my school credits in line to be able to leave halfway through the year.

For the people that contribute to my travels, I will send you a letter once a month while on the trip outlining what I have been up to, what I have observed, the different things I have learned, along with answering any questions you may have. Thank you so much for any donations or shares!
