This year, I wanted to do something a little different. For my 26th birthday, I’m aiming to raise $1,026 to support the clinic at the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Mundgod, India. Drepung Gomang monastery was originally founded in 1416 in Tibet and later re-established in 1972 in India, following Communist China’s occupation

Eight years ago, during my gap year, I traveled to Southern India for the first time to visit Tibetan refugee settlements and rebuilt monastic communities. I was welcomed by the monk with so much kindness and deeply moved by the resilience of the Tibetan community.

What I admire most about this community, which is still largely made up of Tibetan refugees, is their generosity. Monks do not earn an income and rely on the support of others, yet even with their own circumstances, they continue to give. These monasteries in Mundgod support nearby Tibetan settlements and Indian families through education, food programs, and healthcare.

The Community Medical Clinic is one way they do this. It provides free consultations and low-cost medicine to monks, nuns, and local Tibetan and Indian families who might otherwise go without care. Donations also help support medical staff salaries and the clinic’s daily operations. My time in India was a reminder of how much we can take for granted, and supporting this clinic is a small way for me to express my gratitude and desire to give back.

I’ll be returning to India this May for the first time since 2018, and I would love to carry support from my own community with me.

In the spirit of 26, I’m inviting donations of $26, but any amount, greater or smaller, truly makes a tangible difference on the ground.

I will be collecting donations until May 6th, and all proceeds will go toward the clinic. I would also be happy to share an update once all donations have been transferred.
