What started as sharing plant tips and care on Instagram with friends, Tía Planta blossomed into business by proud Afro-Latina entrepreneur Shayla Cabrera.
Shayla has an indescribable energy when she starts talking plants. She truly nurtures not only the plants, but the people who are lucky enough to buy a plant from Tía Planta as well. Along with each of her plant sales, she offers ongoing care and maintenance services for clients who want to make their thumb a bit greener. This includes plant placement consultations (in-home or virtually), plant sitting, and plant care tutorials.
Shayla sees Tía Planta as a way to both do what she loves and connect with the community around her as she and the company continue to grow. She has donated her services as a prize for a local fundraiser, raising money for the Black Trans Travel Fund. She has has also organized a free plant giveaway for her community to help spread the health benefits of houseplants. It is important to Shayla to advocate for the most vulnerable citizens of the world and this is a pillar of the business model.
Starting a small business is a very large undertaking; as a community, we are here to assist Shayla in raising the funds to alleviate many of the extra costs of launching an independent, traveling company.
Within the last 5 month we have accomplished the goal of attaining a new van and have acquired a new studio space. These funds will help meet the costs of setting up our storefront/studio. These operating costs include rent, installation of grow lights, and expanding inventory, handyman fees, application fees, and supplies.
We need to invest in more businesses like Tía Planta and in entrepreneurs like Shayla--ones who are willing and eager to connect and educate--and we especially need to invest more into Black-owned businesses and communities.
