Support Through the Static's Antifascist News Coverage

My name's Hannah Saunders (she/her), and I'm the publisher and editor of Through the Static (TtS), an independent, antifascist news website located in Seattle, Washington. The U.S. is in the midst of fascism and the normalization period, and we see many politely wash over worsening atrocities committed by our governments. We've cut through that static since launching on August 1, 2025.

TtS covers antifascist and breaking news in the Pacific Northwest and on the national level. We also publish activism art, photography, and community submissions- truly making it a publication by and for the community.

TtS is entirely funded by readers and social media followers, who contribute their desired monthly amounts. Reporters and photojournalists with vast industry experience, as well as those who are up-and-coming, volunteer their time to contribute to TtS. This includes Alex Garland, Chris Rojas, Jessa Raven, and Dash Lemons.

Our reporters have covered Minneapolis and Portland protests on the ground, and we regularly post urgent information on social media like ICE sightings, info leaks, upcoming events and protests, and more.

Approaching our seven-month anniversary, we've found that there's a growing need for TtS's news on both the local and national levels, with more people reaching out with interest in writing and to ask if we're hiring. Our donation amount for this month has allowed us to cover website costs for the remainder of the year and to profit slightly.

With increasing demand for TtS's news coverage, we need your help in ensuring we can not only continue bringing you news, but also support local independent reporters and photojournalists.

I quit my job as editor-in-chief of Seattle Gay News and got a job as a housekeeper to support myself as I launched TtS. Since the get-go, it's been my plan to dedicate 50% of my working time to my day job and 50% to TtS. My dream has been to support other independents by platforming their voices and paying them for their work. Journalism is also my passion and strength, and constant physical exertion of housekeeping puts me at risk for severely low blood sugar as a type 1 diabetic. These are positive choices I'd make all over again, even if needing an increase in apple juice consumption.

But my hours have been cut due to overhiring for the winter holidays, and I feel confident enough in TtS, my and the team's reporting, and the community to ask for your support in making this dream a reality.

Our total GoFundMe goal is $10k, which will cover at least two months of work, with $2.5k going towards myself to help pay for basic living expenses.
Our going rates for contributors will be:
$75 for pictures
$150 for articles
$200 for articles and pictures

Part of my dedication to TtS is amplifying community voices, and I welcome people of all backgrounds to contribute in whatever capacity they want, now or in the future.
