Friends/Community, I am asking for help in a situation affecting Thomas Williams.
He has been fighting with the Canadian Government in the court of appeals for 18 months now, and has recently lost.
For those who don’t know, Thomas Williams aka (T-Minus) is the founder and creator of the Round Venue, at 152 Augusta Ave, Toronto ON. This project was a dream of his that became a reality in 2013, after his father passed away. He created a space that aimed to be totally inclusive, and he hoped to unite some of Toronto’s incredible music, dance and art scenes. The venue grew in popularity over the next 3 years and his goal was achieved.
In 2016, a couple of events in his family life caused him to make the tough decision to give up his leadership role at the Round. Thankfully, the business was sold to a great individual who promised to keep the place running and maintain the spirit he had created.
At the end of 2017 he received a letter from the Canadian Revenue Agency requesting the books for an audit. A licensed accountant was on his payroll, so he believed he had no reason to be concerned. The business always paid the required taxes on time, and in full.
After the audit, Thomas was shocked to find out that the CRA claimed that he owed over $10,000 CDN in taxes to the Government. Together with a lawyer, they worked thoroughly through all of the papers from the CRA, and the records from his time running the bar.
It was discovered that all of the money that the venue had paid out to DJ's, Artists, and Promoters over the years, (in the form of bar percentages, and also promotional drink tickets) was being claimed as "unreported income" by the CRA. Any proof that Thomas tried to offer to the auditors was deemed to be "insufficient" and he lost the appeal.
At present, Thomas is quite depressed; emotionally and financially drained. He feels like he is being punished for all his efforts to create a safe space for artists and DJs to perform and get paid.
