⭐ Who Thomas Little Is — The Man Behind the Fight

Before cancer entered his life, Thomas spent nearly three decades serving and protecting the people of Mississippi.

He is a retired Master Sergeant with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, serving 28½ years with honor and dedication:

10 years on the road, protecting Mississippi families

18+ years with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations (MBI)

14½ years on the Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT Team, responding to the most dangerous situations in the state

After retiring in 2022, Thomas continued serving his community as the Director of Works for the town of Sumrall, Mississippi, where he still works full time when his health allows.

He has been a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church since 1996 and is the proud father of Ty, Tate, and Trace Little.

In the midst of battling cancer, Thomas married the love of his life, Michelle, on September 8, 2024 — a moment of joy and hope during the hardest chapter of his life.

⭐ Thomas’s Medical Journey

The Diagnosis

On August 29, 2023, a routine colonoscopy revealed stage 3 rectal cancer. Thomas immediately began a strict anticancer diet while waiting for genetic testing on his tumor — testing that took six weeks to return, but did not give the information needed to show the best chemotherapy options for Thomas.

The Standard Protocol His Body Couldn’t Survive

Every surgeon and oncologist across Mississippi, Jackson, and UAB recommended the same aggressive plan:

6 weeks of radiation

Simultaneous chemotherapy (FOLFOX or CAPEOX)

High-risk rectal surgery with a strong likelihood of a permanent ostomy

More chemotherapy afterward

Thomas wanted to avoid radiation and chemo due to the tumor’s location and the high risk of permanent complications. But every major center insisted this was the only option.

He chose CAPEOX — the regimen with slightly fewer severe side effects — and began radiation on December 14, 2023.

Within days, he developed severe diarrhea, nausea, and rapid weight loss. By February 2024, chemotherapy began — and his body immediately crashed.

Thomas sought answers at MD Anderson in Houston.

After extensive testing, doctors discovered:

A genetic marker that prevents his body from breaking down chemotherapy — explaining why he became dangerously toxic in 2024.

His cancer had metastasized to the liver, filling it with tumor thromboses.

His portal vein had dissolved, likely due to radiation and chemotherapy.

Both the rectal and liver tumors were now inoperable.

MD Anderson recommended “babydose” FOLFOX, but Thomas feared repeating the treatment that nearly killed him.
