In the spring of 2021, their lives changed forever when Thomas, a former University of Michigan football player, professional athlete, and Football Performance Coach began experiencing symptoms that eventually led to an ALS/Lou Gherig’s diagnosis. In one appointment, the future as they knew was suddenly shaken.

Symptoms started as what he assumed was a calf injury. Eventually his fine motor started declining, then mobility in both upper and lower body. Since then, Thomas has had to give up so much of the identity he once carried as an athlete, coach, provider, husband, and father. Their family has faced emotional, physical, and financial battles that only faith in God has carried them through.

Through every challenge, their children have shown incredible strength. As Thomas's abilities have shifted, Sham has become responsible for assisting him with daily duties (bathing, grooming, feeding, etc. and household/parenting duties that were once shared). Due to recent caregiving dynamics shifting abruptly, and times required for appointments, Sham may need to take a temporary leave from her career to navigate these health challenges. In addition, they are currently getting opinions from additional medical professionals for autoimmune and infectious diseases, as they want to pursue all possibilities of a misdiagnosis. Treatment and care have become overwhelming financially, with many expenses falling out of pocket. Between medical care, therapies, equipment, parenting, and daily life, they are humbly asking for support during this season.

Despite the hardship, they still believe in hope, healing, and God’s plan for their family. Every prayer, donation, and share means more than words can express. Thank you for supporting Thomas, Shamaree, and their family during this journey.
