Support Our Beloved Local Chef in His Time of Need

Theo Philips, our head chef at The Perfect Cup, has physically not been able to work since last October.

Serving food with a smile has been a part of Theo’s life since he was a kid, helping his dad at their family place – Supreme - in Queens, New York.

In 2009, Matlacha became his new home and Bert's became his new chef gig. Six years later, he found a perfect match - The Perfect Cup. He became head chef at the café and a cornerstone of support during the transition to the current owners in early 2021.

After Ian, Theo helped The Cup rebuild even as he lost his home. It is at the core of who Theo is - to be a source of laughter and support to those around him.

In 2023, Theo was diagnosed with liver cancer. Facing complications with stabilizing his sugar levels, he trudged on into the battle against cancer.

Last October, just after Helene & Milton hit, while he was still facing chemotherapy treatments, Theo was in a terrible car accident, totaled his car, and suffered severe injuries. At first, there was concern that he may lose his leg. After aggressive treatment, he thought he was on the path to recovery, but complications continue to arise, and the infection has traveled to the bone.

Now, it is almost March and Theo is looking at more surgeries, months of recovery, and physical therapy ahead for him.
