Support Theatre of the Bacchant's Debut Production

Hello from Theatre of the Bacchant!

We are a New York City-based theatre company seeking funding for our debut production, antigonē: a play against birth. This is a new translation of the ancient Greek Sophoklean tragedy by classicist and playwright Lane St. Sebastian. Directed by Kaila Tacazon, antigonē takes place in a world where communication becomes a barrier to justice. Each character speaks in a different literary style, rendering them incapable of understanding each other. When speech sputters into incoherence how can we determine what is right and wrong? Our production presents a choros fearful of our complicity in the violence of the state, and they become a tool for audiences to reconsider their stake in advocacy.

In alignment with our company mission, our production of antigonē will reveal the inherent queer and trans themes in history. This project is lead by a 90% queer, trans, and/or BIPOC production team. We also seek to hire a majority queer or trans cast to tell this story, featuring a canonically nonbinary Antigonē and transmasc Polyneikes. Furthermore, we will be using race-conscious casting to explore the nuances of authoritarianism for racial minorities. These initiatives make our production personal and relevant to the modern world.

Every dollar of this campaign goes towards:
Venue rental,
Rehearsal space, and
Paying our cast and crew.
It is of utmost importance to us that we are compensating members of our communities for their time, energy, vulnerability, and artistry. This is why the funds from this campaign will be going directly into the pockets of The People!

Our total production budget can be viewed HERE. Additional funding comes from Producer M Cantu and Playwright Lane St. Sebastian.
