Support the Winogradov Family in Their Time of Need

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

My name is Nichelle McCovey, and I’ve had the privilege of being Ashlyn Farrington’s best friend and an “adopted” daughter to the incredible Winogradov family for over ten years. This family has been a beacon of love, support, and strength to everyone fortunate enough to know them. They’ve always been there for anyone in need, and now, they’re facing a tragedy no one should have to bear.

The Winogradov family is made up of Dale, who owns a medical courier business and was recently honored for his unwavering support of the indigenous tribes in Humboldt County. Angela, the heart of the family, has been a devoted nurse for 27 years and is now one of the lead public health nurses in the county, tirelessly caring for her patients. Ashlyn, a behavioral health rehabilitation specialist in Siskiyou County, has dedicated her career to helping those struggling with mental health challenges. And Alex, my brother by choice, was an incredibly bright, kind young man whose life was tragically shadowed by addiction.

On Monday, October 14th, their world changed forever.

Angela received a devastating call from Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka. Alex had been found unconscious and unresponsive. A kind stranger administered CPR until paramedics arrived, reviving him after 35 minutes. Ashlyn, who had been Alex’s biggest support in recent years, rushed to the hospital as soon as she heard. Despite the efforts of the doctors, they soon realized Alex had suffered a massive hypoxic brain injury that he would not recover from.

For five days, Ashlyn stayed by his side, her heart breaking as she held his hand, waiting for her mother to arrive. The agony of those days cannot be described, yet amidst the tragedy, there was a glimmer of hope: Alex was a match for organ donation. On October 19th, he was transferred to San Francisco to begin the process of giving others the chance to live. Even in death, Alex’s heart was full of generosity.

But heartbreak continued to ripple through this family. On the same day Alex was transferred, Ashlyn began experiencing excruciating pain and was rushed to the emergency room, where she was diagnosed with a ruptured endometriosis cyst and pancreatitis. While her brother was being prepared to save lives, Ashlyn was admitted to the same hospital, battling her own medical emergency.

As of today, Ashlyn remains hospitalized. While her condition is stabilizing, the emotional and physical pain of losing her brother while enduring her own medical crisis has been overwhelming.

On October 22nd, at 2:25 PM, Alex passed away peacefully, and his selfless donation saved four lives. The loss of Alex has left an immeasurable hole in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and now, in the lives he saved.

This family, who has always given so much to others, now faces the heavy financial burden of medical bills for Ashlyn’s hospital stay, as well as the costs of cremating and memorializing Alex. Ashlyn has also had to take time off work to recover from her medical emergency and to grieve the loss of her brother. Sadly, she has no paid leave remaining, as she had to use all of it earlier this year when caring for her young daughter after her massive cleft palate surgery in June.

If you are able to contribute, no matter the amount, your support will help ease the financial strain during this devastating time. If you are unable to donate, we simply ask that you share this post to help spread the word. Your kindness, in whatever form, will mean the world to this family who has always been there for others in their time of need.

Though we cannot bring Alex back, your support can help lighten the burden on the Winogradovs as they begin to navigate life without him. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
