Support the Wilsons' Recovery after Helene

For those who don't know myself or my family, I am Katie Burkholder. My husband, Adam, and I live in Mebane, NC and we are are close friends with James and Katie Wilson, and our boys are close with their boys, Caleb and Daniel. Adam and James grew up together in Tallahassee and have been friends since high school. Some background on the Wilson Family - They now live in Arden, NC, just outside of Asheville, where James and Katie both work as teachers/educators in local schools.

On Sept 27th, at approx 8:00 am, several large trees fell on or near the Wilsons' home in Hurricane Helene. One of the largest trees fell on their kitchen/utility room/bonus room area in addition to their deck. Additional trees have taken out their outdoor storage buildings. James, Katie, the boys, and their 2 dogs (Penny and Luna) have been able to stay in a local community center building since Friday. We are thankful that the local Fire Dept opened the building to give them temporary shelter.

James and Katie, thankfully, have homeowners insurance; however, if you are aware of the general state/condition of Western NC, you probably know that they are in a long queue of others needing to file insurance claims/reimbursement. To further complicate matters, James and Katie are both teachers, and at this moment we are unsure of:

1) How much (if any) of their regular paychecks will be coming through given the catastrophic nature of this storm and its impact on all infrastructure.

2) When schools will reopen in order for James and Katie to return to their jobs.

3) When roads, water/sewer service, and/or power will be restored for them to stay in the area or near their home while they repair/rebuild their roofing structure and kitchen/utility room/bonus room and deck.

In the meantime, we anticipate that they will need to continue to cover their mortgage, living expenses (however that may look for the time being), deductibles, etc.
