Support the Welsch Patterson family

The Welsch Patterson family’s lives have turned upside down. After multiple ER visits, Jeremy learned he had both a large mass on his left kidney and a massive pulmonary embolism. Just days after this diagnosis, Jeremy’s mass ruptured and he was admitted to the ICU to undergo emergency surgery. After consultations with oncology specialists in both Nebraska and Mayo Clinic, Jeremy was diagnosed with renal synovial sarcoma, a rare form of kidney cancer.

While sarcomas are not typically staged, Jeremy’s is comparable to stage four due to the size of the tumor and spread to the lymph nodes and surrounding areas. Jeremy started an aggressive form of chemotherapy on December 19th. Ideally, the chemo would eradicate the cancer, but more realistically it allows him time until another treatment becomes available or he is able to participate in a clinical trial.

Jeremy is looking at an unknown prognosis and an unknown timeline for ongoing treatment. He and Ember have transitioned to one income so that Jeremy can focus on his health and are looking at a future of growing medical bills while preparing for their new baby, due in a few months, requiring a new car to accommodate three car seats. During it all, Jeremy works diligently to maintain his role as father to Ada and Burton, husband to Ember, and friend to countless many.

As many of us who directly know them, all members of the Welsch Patterson family have been a quiet (though at times incredibly present and vocal) support. It is our turn to support them. Even if you do not know them directly, I hope you can find a way to support them in their time of great need.
