The Village is a new Afrocentric cultural, learning, and healing center in the city of Worcester! We started this journey in September 2020 after the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and too many other Black folks at the hands of the police. Since transitioning from the Stone Soup Artist/Activist Collective, we have been in the process of reclaiming the building, shifting leadership and structure, and dreaming up events and programs we would like to start.
The five pillars of The Village of racial & social justice, learning, creativity, community, and healing. Since launching, three youth programs enjoyed their summer learning about racial solidarity, hydroponic gardening, and volunteering. Numerous artists, creators and vendors have shared their work during our marketplaces, and four community organizations have been empowered and found home at The Village! We have a vision for The Village to be a space for the preservation & celebration of Black culture, learning & community building, and collective holistic healing.
Though grants have been submitted and we continue to push forward, we are seeking the community’s support to ensure that our expenses are covered through the end of the year. Since opening, we have been having challenges with having a consistent tenant to contribute rent payments and want to be intentional about the groups/organizations that are sharing space to ensure that their work aligns with our values.
We are asking for those who are able to make a financial contribution to support us in covering expenses through the end of this year! We are hopeful that we will be awarded some, if not all, of the grants that we have submitted, funding would not become available until the beginning of next year. We are always looking for individuals and organizations that are interested in renting office and/or community spaces and welcome the community to join us for programs and events that we will be hosting starting at the beginning of next year!
