On September 1st, our dear friend Curtis VanAtta, age 49, was in a devastating car accident caused by a catastrophic stroke he suffered around 11:30 AM.
Curtis is currently in the hospital, and after extensive testing, doctors have declared him brain dead. Family and friends are gathering to say their final goodbyes to this incredible husband, father, and friend.
Curtis was the loving husband of my best friend Lori VanAtta, whom I’ve known for over 20 years. Together, they built a beautiful life in Santee, where they’ve raised their three daughters: Gaby (26), Lizzy (21), and Ally (16).
For over 10 years, Curtis worked for General Atomics, where he was a well-loved and respected employee. Outside of work, he devoted himself entirely to his family — attending every sporting event, fixing and repairing everything around the house, and making memories with his daughters at rock concerts and family trips.
Curtis was the kind of person who would drop everything to help a friend, whether it was moving furniture, repairing something, or simply making us laugh. He had a big heart, an amazing sense of humor, and a deep love for his family and friends.
Now, as the VanAtta family faces the unimaginable, they are also facing significant financial burdens — including hospital bills not covered by insurance, rent, utilities, groceries, and the many unexpected costs that come with this tragedy.
We are asking for your love, prayers, and support during this incredibly difficult time. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference and help Lori and the girls as they navigate life without Curtis.
Please keep the VanAtta family in your hearts and prayers.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and compassion.
With love and gratitude,
