We are coming together to support the Vales family as they face one of the most painful and uncertain moments of their lives. I first met the Vales family in 2016 when our daughters became best friends, and over the years, they have truly become like family to us.

Lazaro, a devoted father and husband, has been detained by ICE since late October. He is a man of integrity who has worked multiple jobs, paid all his taxes, and consistently served his community with kindness and humility.

At the same time, his wife, Bertha, has been fighting for her life. For five months, she endured a long and devastating stay in the ICU due to severe kidney and heart failure. She underwent multiple surgeries, including open-heart surgery to implant a life-sustaining LVAD — a battery-powered device that is now keeping her alive. Bertha is also legally blind and must continue regular dialysis treatments. Though she is finally home, her condition remains fragile, she cannot work, and she requires constant care.

Before his detention, Lazaro worked tirelessly to support his family while spending every free moment caring for his wife and comforting their daughter, Sam, who is struggling under the weight of fear and uncertainty. His absence has left a painful void in their lives.
