My name is Kelly and I'm reaching out on behalf of the sweet Valdez family. They have been quietly struggling for the past year and a half. They need our support, this is their story.

Richard (Rich) Valdez had his second stroke on Jun 3rd 2023 (he had a very minor one a couple years before). He lost use of the entire right side and it affected his speech, vision and other major workings of the body. He was in the hospital for a month and a half then sent home to rehabilitate.

The first year, our short and long term disability coverage took care of most of our regular expenses but the medical bills piled up quickly. For the last two and half years while he has been recovering, we have had to use up all of our savings, our retirement funds and borrow from family to make ends meet. Unfortunately, this year funds ran low and our mortgage and utilities were increased so much that our home and medical bills were not getting covered.

Rich is walking now but his abilities are still recovering. We have been told it could take many years for him to get back to "close to where he was before". Though Rich is finally back to working full time as of October, his income has been reduced, since he cannot work the overtime and longer shifts he was before. We now are getting prepared to sell our home and working hard to keep our home out of forclosure. We have to get our house sold and us moved into a much cheaper place by the end of January. We will need to create enough funds to cover our existing mortgage payment and whatever is required by the new place...$6-8,000! Makes me choke a little just thinking of it.

It is definitely beyond what he and I ever thought we might go through. It is especially rough on our daughter, Trinity, who is 15 and has her own challenges with deafness, ADHD-I, and all the challenges of being a teenager.

We are so grateful to the community and friends we have met at the Rock. We used to be the ones to offer support to others and it is very uncomfortable for us to ask for help and to be in the position where we need it. I know I couldn't have gotten this far without all of you.
