Support the Suryadi Family

Donation protected

This fundraiser is to support the Yadisur Family from West Java, Indonesia.

Yadi has worked as a groundskeeper in a South Jakartan guesthouse for the past 14 years. Throughout his career Yadi has been a well respected member of his local community. He is very friendly and resourceful, always going above and beyond to help his guests and neighbours. No problem is too big or too small for Yadi when it comes to helping his guests, including those from different countries and languages. Yadi is always able to help people feel at home in a foreign place.

  • Unfortunately, due to the pandemic Yadi’s wages are not sufficient to support his young family. Any financial shocks above baseline survival needs are unattainable with his current income and wage cuts. His wife was recently sick with gastric problems and admitted to a local clinic. This greatly impacted their ability to help send money to other family members in this time of crisis.

This Monday, Yadi received news that his brother inlaw, Radi, had lost everything in a fire. Radi, is a 30 year old farmer living in the isolated jungles of Jambi, Sumatra. After a long day of working in the Palm Oil plantation, came home to find his home burnt entirely to the ground. Radi and his coworkers lost everything in the fire, all of their possessions, motorbikes, food and money they had saved. Luckily Radi’s wife and blind four year old daughter were unharmed.

  • Radi has worked in the area for years, and built these barracks from the ground up. There are no roads leading to this location as it is extremely rural and isolated, acquiring and transporting supplies is difficult and took many years to build.

Radi is the main provider of Yadi’s sick mother inlaw, living in rural Jambi. All of his savings had been lost in the fire. Given Yadi’s wage cuts and current financial situation, this sudden shock leaves them with next to nothing.

Yadi is aspiring to break this cycle and build his own business to properly sustain himself and his family for future generations. Throughout his 14 years of groundskeeping, Yadi has managed to save up and purchase land to build a future business.

  • Yadi has plans to build a local bicycle rental and repair shop in his home village of Bungbulang, Garut, West Jawa. His village is quaint and beautiful with many outdoor attractions such as hot springs, hiking trails, lookout points, and volleyball courts. He wishes to add value to his village by creating a bicycle rental shop, where kids can rent bikes to be more active and have access to self transportation.

  • Yadi currently owns a location to build his bicycle rental repair shop, but it first requires a fair amount of renovations. There are photos and videos of the current state of his property, it is a bamboo structure on the edge of a cliff. The planned renovations include restructuring the foundations with cement and iron beams, restrengthening the rockbed of the cliff to prevent erosion as well as replacing the bamboo with termite proof wood. He plans to renovate the space himself with the help of his brothers, and is currently trying to save money for material costs. He estimates this cost at $3,500.

  • Yadi plans to purchase thrifted bicycles from local markets, revamp them and sell or rent them along with other spare parts which are currently hard to find in his region. Garut is a mountainous region that is quite rural and isolated from the resources of major cities.

You can help the Yadisur family by donating to this fund, any amount is appreciated from $1 onwards. Yadi and his family are immensely grateful to anyone who reads this campaign, to anyone who shares their story, to anyone who donates any amount of money to their endeavours.

By sending support you are helping advance the situation of not just one family but an entire community. Classism is very much alive in Indonesia, and oftentimes it’s nearly impossible to change your given fate on your own. After 14 years of service to a South Jakartan guest house, The Yadisur family aspires to return to their roots and build something in their village to sustain their family for future generations.

Bungbulang is an immensely beautiful mountainous area, with great potential for a cycling community. Your support will help to build a more active community, and the linkages from this family business will help to improve the conditions of the roads and infrastructure in the local area.
