We’ve recently shared the news with our community of having to close our sundays studio doors to ensure the safety of our employees and clients. Amongst the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, we had no other choice but to do so. With that difficult decision came the reality of having to send home more than 50 of our wonderful, sundays nail specialists. This decision truly broke my heart and made me persistently search for ways that I can help support them. I started a 20% off our e-gift cards promotion and decided to distribute 100% of those purchases to our incredible nail specialists. We’ve sold many gift cards and received so much support from our clients, friends, family and community but unfortunately it’s not enough to help all of our lovely ladies through this difficult time. So now I have no other choice but to ask for your help to get them through this time of hardship. These women mean so much to me, to our clients and to sundays, so I’m kindly asking for your donation.
Eight years ago, I decided to take a leap and attend a nail school in New York, after 2 years of working in the fashion industry. It was the riskiest but the best decision I made, because I got to meet a lot of people I might not have had the chance to be friends with. What made me feel a deeper connection with these ladies was the fact that many of them, just like me, moved to this country with little knowledge of English. These friendships changed my perspective on how truly vital it is to form valuable human connections and support one another. I saw a lot of my old self in these nail specialists, seeing their potential regardless of their circumstance. Before that, I barely knew a nail specialist’s name. When one of our nail specialists, Deepa asked to work as a sundays front desk manager knowing that she would be making less money and she said “its’ not about the money, I just want to learn”. It made me feel immensely proud. And it supported my belief that many nail specialists, just like Deepa are incredibly smart and driven.
When I opened sundays, a part of my mission was to bring our clients and specialists closer and to break the nail technician stereotype. To extend this mission we took steps towards making both our employees and customers feel more comfortable in our studios. These steps included using the same chairs for our nail specialists and clients and naming our nail polish by numerical numbers so that our specialists won’t feel embarrassed if they can’t find a shade called “Ballet Slippers”. Yes, they are a very sensitive group of people who can be shy and easily turn red when they can’t answer your questions, but please note that they love you wholeheartedly. Even if they can’t say your name sometimes, they remember you and your preference by heart. They talk to me about client’s requests all the time: “my clients ask if the bathroom spray is natural? Can we make sure?" Our nail specialists consider you family, caring for you and your well-being just like they would for a loved one. They're one of us, they really care but sometimes can't find the right words to express their feelings.
To stay in touch and to ensure that our nail specialists are doing well, we formed a Whatsapp group. They often send us photos of their family to keep connected and show they're doing ok. It would break my heart to see them struggling or lacking any support, as a lot of them have kids and some of them are single moms. I will do everything I can to support them and to give them extra money to get through this tough time. And I want to do so by paying them one more week, so that they feel supported during this difficult time. However, I am not in the financial position right now to do so. That’s why I started this campaign.
I know you love them as much as I do; that kind and vulnerable group of people, that always gives you the most original reactions about what they like and what they think. My friends often say that they are like your kids or family. They are half joking but mostly true. Coming from different cultures and backgrounds, our nail specialists might not always know how to put on a best smile, not because they’re unfriendly but simply because they’re shy or it’s just not something common in their cultures. But they are the faces of sundays, the ones creating an oasis filled with simple love and support and who try their best to help our clients relax after a stressful day.
I think this crisis reminds of the importance of human connection and the power of humanity. We want to continue providing the non-toxic nail services to make all our clients’ nails look good while making sure that everyone is happy. We want to continue our mission of connecting our specialists with our lovely and beautiful clients.
Collectively, we are stronger.
