July 16th, 2025 started like any normal day. I woke up, drove to work, and started teaching my safe-passage classes. At 11:23 am, I received a call from my mom that would change our lives forever. My mom had come home from work, found my dad unresponsive, and the paramedics were on their way. As I drove home from work, I remained on the phone with my mom as she entered the hospital and was escorted immediately to the chapel. I listened in as they told us the outlook was grim and recommended he be removed from the respirator. We talked it over and made the toughest decision of our lives as we agreed since he had no brain activity that it was the best option. As I pulled into my driveway to pick up my nephew at 1:00 pm, my mom called and let me know he was gone. I met my family at the hospital to talk with doctors and hospital staff about our next steps when I received a call from home where I was informed a storm had passed through and part of a large tree in the neighbor's yard had fallen onto the garage and had gone through the roof, not only causing damage to the roof and gutters but also to my belongings inside.
On behalf of the Sonnenberg Family, we are grateful for the support we have been shown by our family, friends, and co-workers. Donations will be used to help support my mom and help with my dad's final expenses.
