2024 was an incredibly difficult year for the Slonikers. As some of you may already know, 7-year old Lilley was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in April. School, gymnastics, softball and playdates were replaced by frequent hospitalizations, aggressive chemotherapy and their accompanying side effects. Her childhood has been inundated with experiences that are hard for anyone to endure: nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, hair loss, weakness and pain. Lilley has been a brave and resilient warrior through it all.
Lilley's dad, Michael, took a backseat in his career to be able to care for Lilley full-time while Lilley's mom, Trina, continued her work as a nurse practitioner. Despite the strain of these daily challenges, the Slonikers continued to extend their assistance to others in need. With the help of their family and friends, they donated over 300 beanies to Lilley’s cancer clinic for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. More recently, they collected over 100 toys for the Lurie Children’s Hospital over the holidays.
With Lilley entering maintenance phase chemotherapy in December, the family was hopeful for an optimistic end to 2024. However, they were dealt another unexpected blow when Michael suffered a major heart attack on Christmas Day. He had a 100% blockage in one of his coronary arteries, and needed emergency stent placement.
The new year brings with it a new set of challenges. Lilley will continue to require oral chemo daily and IV chemo every 3 months, and Michael now needs weekly cardiac rehabilitation. With Trina as their sole caretaker and provider, the physical, emotional, and financial toll on their family is overwhelming.
Trina’s only birthday wish on December 29 was for 2025 to be kinder to her family. We have the opportunity to help make that wish come true. We humbly ask for your prayers and support. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help cover medical bills and living expenses as Lilley and Michael undergo treatment. Your generosity can ease their burden and help them focus on healing together as a family.
Thank you for your love and support. If you have questions, please send us a message using the "Contact" button here.
With gratitude,
—Trina’s sisters: Toneena (Christine), Thea, Trisha (Stel), and Tara (Chrissi)
