Boy Scout Troop 3 was forced to stop holding in person meetings, events, and camping trips since early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, our program continues to be as active as ever as new ways have been created for our Scouts to access the program. Scouting at Troop 3 is now conducted virtually, with Troop Meetings held each week, merit badges offered on a regular basis and virtual camporees being participated in. The Scouts are also providing service to our community by making face masks for healthcare workers, greeting cards for those suffering from COVID-19 and are cleaning local parks overwhelmed with garbage being produced by the increase in foot traffic. The means by which we deliver Scouting has changed, however; our program based on values of good character and citizenship is as strong as ever.
This great program is made possible by the efforts of countless Scouts and Scouters, however; fundraising is a critical piece to this as well. Unfortunately, the troop has needed to cancel its pasta dinner fundraiser scheduled for this May and the water sale we hold at the Bethlehem Fair in early September may not take place either. The Scouts are working to sell popcorn online, however; they need additional financial support to continue their program.
Every little bit helps; thus, we are asking for you to consider making a donation to support the Scouts of Troop 3. Since we are not camping, there is some savings, however; there many financial commitments that remain whether we are meeting and camping in person or not.
Your donation will help to pay for the following:
- Merit Badges, patches and other awards Scouts earn during this Virtual Scouting.
- Subscription to teleconferencing platform necessary to conduct Virtual Scouting.
- Fees for guest presenters from museums, national parks and Scout camps from across the country. These individuals offer unique perspectives and expertise that further the skills of our Scouts.
- Eagle Scout Medals, Neckerchiefs, and Pins earned by those Scouts who earn this prestigious rank during or just before this pandemic. (To date one Scout has completed, several more may over the coming months)
- Provide financial support for Scouts in need to participate in online summer camp opportunities.
- Funds to reserve campsites once campgrounds open and it is safe to return to camping.
We at Troop 3 strive to offer a great Scouting Program to the youth of the greater Torrington area. All of us at Troop 3 have done our best during these unprecedented times and your generosity would be greatly appreciated to help us continue this work.
