Support the Ruheim family and Rebuild Walrus Subs
Donation protected
On March 10, 2020, Walrus Subs in Austintown caught fire. The business, which has been a staple in our community since opening in 2013, was a total loss. The fire occurred during a 6 day lapse in insurance coverage, so the Ruheims are on their own with recovery. This lapse in insurance has nothing to do with them - they have carried insurance for 9 years. They were not notified that the insurance had been cancelled on March 6 after having been paid February 26. The broker they deal with is no longer in business and the Ruheims' attorneys are involved.
If you know the owner, Alie Ruheim, you know he is one of the most respectul, hardest working, and most generous people you could ever know. He is the epitome of the phrase, "he'd give the shirt of his back." Alie has volunteered his time and talents to benefit so many people and organizations within our township. This restaurant was his dream come true, not to mention the income he used to support his family, including his wonderful wife, Holly, and their sweet boys, Gabe, Zane, and Luke.
Walrus Subs has not only been a staple as a delicious dinner spot. They've been a constant line of financial support to the youth in Austintown, having sponsored every athletic program in our community, from youth baseball, soccer, and football (Alie is also head coach with the Austintown Little Falcons) to AMS, to Fitch. They've provided meals for the Fitch football team at their away games, and adopted numerous athetes through Fitch's Adopt a Falcon program.
Most importantly, Alie is a man of God. You may have met him at Highway Tabernacle or at Victory Christian Church. One of the first events I remember him holding at Walrus was in partnership with Victory where they gave away 100 FREE Walrus Subs -- for no reason other than to show love to the community we all call home.
Among the things he holds closest to his heart are his family and his community. And now, it's our turn, as his community, to support him and his family through this tragic loss, and give back to the wonderful people who have given so much to us, to our children, and to our township.
Money donated will benefit the Ruheim Family directly by providing for their interim needs as they rebuild their business, as well as help contribute to the costs of replacing losses that were not covered by insurance.
