How do you help and support two kind and intelligent kids, who in the span of two years, have lost both of their parents unexpectedly? Paola (12 years old) and Diego (10 years old) lost their mother Nancy Rivas on February 17, 2019, Nancy’s 42nd birthday.
We feel tremendous sadness for Nancy, a dedicated mother and nurse at Lynn Community Health Center who had kindness and compassion for everyone she came into contact with. We feel for Nancy’s mother who has endured unimaginable hardship with the murder of her husband, her son’s fatal hit and run accident, and now the untimely passing of her daughter.
And most of all, our hearts break for these two kids. Paola and Diego are fantastic kids who have to endure growing up without parents. On 2/21, Diego turned 11 without his mother’s loving embrace. On 2/22, these two kids returned to the same funeral home where they said goodbye to their father and uncle in the last few years. They have an extended family that is very loving but has limited means. Nancy’s cousin Claudia and her husband have generously welcomed Paola and Diego into their home. And, they need our support, now and moving forward.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 to start two college accounts and to support Claudia and her husband as they raise these two kids. We hope that giving Paola and Diego a gift that represents the love people had for their mother Nancy will help them feel their mother’s love and kindness for years to come.
Wayne Altman and Vanna Altman, friends and colleagues of Nancy, will set up the colleges funds for the girls.
