The post-pandemic rebirth of Lovesick
Donation protected
In the brief hiatus between lockdowns in 2020, writer and performer Georgina Barley staged a scaled back ‘Covid edit’ of her debut play Lovesick at the White Bear. In collaboration with dramaturg & director Marlie Haco, they have since developed the piece into an exciting new drama that weaves together naturalistic dialogue, verse and movement to explore the play’s potent themes of grief, love and loneliness. This year, Lovesick returns in its extended form, and will be touring around theatres in London. In order to fully realise our creative vision - we need your help!
With your support, we will be able to pay our cast and creative team fairly and cover the costs involved in bringing a project like this to the stage (including hire fees, marketing materials, set and costume etc.). We know it has been a hard year for all, particularly freelancers in the arts industries, and we would really appreciate your generosity in helping us get back to what we live for: telling stories to live audiences like you.
We appreciate any support you can spare, every penny makes a difference. If you donate over £100 we would like to offer you a ticket to the show, a mention in our programme and a poster from the show run. If you are eligible, please contact us to arrange this.
If we go over our projected goal and make a profit on the production, we will donate to Children’s Hearts Foundation (https://chfed.org.uk/how-we-help/ ), a charity dedicated to helping children and young people impacted by congenital heart conditions.

A little more about the play:
Lovesick centres around two strong female characters - a woman who receives a heart transplant and her surgeon. Through an unusual combination of dialogue, poetry and movement, the play looks at the extent to which organs hold memory, and examines the complex feelings we harbour towards those that save our lives and those that leave us behind after death. Exploring the emotional ties between patient, surgeon and donor, Lovesick sheds light on the human desire to find meaning and connection.
In a thoughtful and compelling new version, Lovesick will be brought to the stage this year by director Marlie Haco, alongside producer Adele Reeves and the rest of their all female creative team.

Writer and performer - Georgina Barley

Georgina is an Australian/British actor and writer. She has a particular interest in the history and philosophy of science and medicine, and enjoys creating stories that investigate alternative realities around a scientific stimulus. This is her first play, born one dreary London afternoon while listening to Bob Dylan’s ‘Lovesick’ on the top deck of a bus.
Georgina is thrilled to be bringing this play to the stage again, with such an inspirational team of creative women.

Director & dramaturg - Marlie Haco

Marlie specialises in working with new writing, helping playwrights to make bold choices with confidence and clarity in order to create their best work for the stage. As a director, she is particularly drawn to text-based, character-driven stories that seek to unearth the complexities of our psychologies and relationships. Having danced for many years, Marlie loves to incorporate movement into her work, exploring how aspects of a narrative that may resist verbal expression can be told through physical means.
Other recent/upcoming work includes: Chinese Boxing (Norwich Fringe), Words Without Consent (Brighton Fringe, Southwark Playhouse), Blue Bottles (Lion and Unicorn Theatre), Nelly (Live Streamed)
About working on this play specifically, Marlie has said:
“As soon as I read Lovesick back in March of this year, I was excited by it - the scope and potential of the piece immediately stood out to me. It has been such a joy to work with Georgina over the past few months to find ways to dig a little deeper into the complex issues the play engages with. Now, I can’t wait to get back into the rehearsal room and turn the story that’s evolved on the page into a three dimensional reality! It will be a real gift to be able to present our work in a theatre to the audiences we’ve been unable to connect with for so long.”
