Honoring a Legacy of Leadership and Service
Paul P. Gladfelty was more than a trailblazer in California’s government affairs—he was a steadfast advocate whose work and character have left an indelible mark on the capitol community. With over five decades of distinguished service, Paul dedicated his life to bridging divides, championing causes, and mentoring future leaders in public policy and advocacy.
Beginning his career in the 1970s with the Service Employees International Union, Paul quickly demonstrated a keen understanding of policy and a passion for advocacy. His journey continued as he became a powerful voice for the California Manufacturer’s Association, rising to the position of Vice President and Chief Lobbyist. It was during this time that he also founded "Californians for Compensation Reform," a testament to his commitment to fair and effective policy.
In 1984, Paul embarked on an entrepreneurial venture by establishing Gladfelty Government Relations. Soon after, he co-founded The Apex Group alongside his partner Dave Ackerman, creating one of California's most respected legislative advocacy firms. Paul's straightforward approach and unwavering integrity enabled him to defend the business community on critical issues ranging from environmental quality and energy to healthcare, land use, insurance, and labor law.
Paul's academic journey was as impressive as his professional career. A proud alumnus of California State University, Fullerton, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Government, Paul further honed his expertise by obtaining a Juris Doctor from McGeorge School of Law. His connection to McGeorge was deep and enduring, and it is in his honor that the Paul P. Gladfelty Memorial Scholarship for Government Affairs and Public Policy is established—an enduring tribute to his legacy.
More than his accomplishments, Paul was celebrated for his honesty, determination, and remarkable ability to unite diverse perspectives in search of common solutions. His mentorship and guidance have touched countless lives, influencing a generation of leaders committed to service and advocacy. Beyond his professional legacy, Paul was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, whose warmth and compassion enriched the lives of everyone around him.
Today, as we celebrate Paul’s life and the enduring impact of his work, we invite you to join us in ensuring that his spirit of advocacy continues to inspire future leaders.
