Among the very first native families rooted directly on the Avellanas beachfront was the beloved Nieves family — a family whose warmth, resilience, and hospitality helped shape the spirit of this special place long before tourism arrived.
Today, we come together with heavy hearts to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Nieves, a woman whose presence became woven into the soul of Avellanas itself.
For decades, the Nieves family welcomed travelers from across Costa Rica and around the world onto their land through the iconic Nieves Surf Camping Site. What began as a humble beachfront space became far more than a camping destination — it became a cultural meeting place, a sanctuary for surfers, backpackers, families, and adventurers seeking the authentic heart of Costa Rica.
Thousands of visitors have shared unforgettable moments there:
waking up to the sound of the Pacific Ocean,
sharing stories under the stars,
learning about local traditions,
and experiencing the warmth and kindness that made the Nieves family so deeply respected throughout the community.
In many ways, the Nieves Surf Camping Site became a living historical landmark of Playa Avellanas — preserving the spirit of old Costa Rica while introducing people from all over the world to the beauty, simplicity, and culture of this sacred coastline.
As Avellanas has grown and changed over the years, the Nieves family remained a symbol of authenticity, humility, and connection to the roots of the land. Mrs. Nieves carried that spirit with grace, strength, and generosity. Her life touched countless people — from lifelong local residents to international visitors who returned home carrying memories of her kindness forever in their hearts.
Today, we are asking the community, friends, travelers, surfers, and all those whose lives were touched by the Nieves family to come together in support during this difficult time.
This fundraiser will help support the family with funeral expenses, immediate family needs, and preserving the legacy of one of Avellanas’ founding native families.

Antes de que Playa Avellanas fuera conocida por sus olas, sus atardeceres y su belleza natural que hoy atrae visitantes de todo el mundo, ya existían familias locales que cuidaban estas tierras y vivían en conexión profunda con el mar y la naturaleza. Entre esas primeras familias nativas de Avellanas se encontraba la querida familia Nieves, una familia que forma parte de la historia viva de esta comunidad.
Hoy nos unimos con mucho dolor y amor para honrar la vida y el legado de Doña Nieves, una mujer noble, trabajadora y querida por tantos, cuya esencia quedará para siempre sembrada en el corazón de Playa Avellanas.
Durante décadas, la familia Nieves abrió las puertas de su hogar y su tierra a personas de todas partes del mundo a través del reconocido Nieves Surf Camping Site. Lo que comenzó como un espacio sencillo frente al mar, con el tiempo se convirtió en mucho más que un lugar para acampar: se convirtió en un punto de encuentro cultural, un hogar para surfistas, viajeros, mochileros y familias que buscaban conocer la verdadera esencia de Costa Rica.
Miles de personas vivieron momentos inolvidables ahí:

Para muchos, el Nieves Surf Camping Site se convirtió en un lugar histórico de Playa Avellanas, preservando el espíritu auténtico de la vieja Costa Rica y enseñándole al mundo la belleza, humildad y riqueza cultural de esta costa tan especial.
Aunque Avellanas ha cambiado muchísimo con los años, la familia Nieves siempre representó las raíces verdaderas del pueblo: humildad, esfuerzo, unión familiar y amor por la tierra. Doña Nieves llevaba esos valores con una sonrisa, con fortaleza y con una generosidad que tocó la vida de muchísimas personas, tanto locales como visitantes internacionales que jamás olvidarán su cariño.
Hoy queremos pedirle a la comunidad, amistades, surfistas, viajeros y a todas las personas que alguna vez fueron recibidas por la familia Nieves, que nos unamos para apoyarles en este momento tan difícil.
Esta campaña ayudará a cubrir gastos funerarios, apoyar a la familia en sus necesidades inmediatas y honrar el legado de una de las primeras familias nativas de Playa Avellanas.
