My name is Erinn Beech and I am a Canadian citizen who is volunteering and working in Honduras right now. I am volunteering in La Ceiba in Honduras. I am a teacher and am with the Lighthouse Christian Bilingual School in La Ceiba Honduras. Last year, I was in a small rural village called Cacao (about 30 minutes from the city of La Ceiba). I was volunteering with a Canadian run organization called Adventures in Missions in Cacao. Luis Manzanares, a Honduran Citizen, was working with the same mission organization. His family lives in the little village of Cacao. I met his father, Ines Manzaneres, and his mother, Teresa Rodriguez, when I was volunteering during my time there. I spent many evenings visiting their house and getting to know their family. His father is a pastor of a small church and does work in Agriculture. They live a humble life and do not have excess amounts of money to pay for doctor visits, medicine, or operations.
When I was visiting Cacao during Christmas holidays, Luis’s mother, Teresa, told me she was having trouble seeing and had constant pain in her head. I told her that I would be praying and hoped the pain got better. During the Christmas vacation, December 20-January 6, she went to local doctors and the public hospital, Hospital Atlántida in La Ceiba in order to find out the problem. Afterwards, the doctors told her that she had a non-cancerous brain tumour and it was affecting her vision and causing lots of pain. They said Teresa could have the operation in La Ceiba, which would cost about 15,000$ USD approximately or she could go to the public hospital in Tegucigalpa for the operation and it would be significantly less. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras and is approximately 7-8 hours away from Cacao and La Ceiba. During the week of Jan 15-19, Ines and Teresa, Luis’s parents, travelled to Tegucigalpa.
They are currently in the hospital, where Teresa is waiting for her operation. The doctors are planning to operate on Wednesday. His father went to Tegucigalpa with all his savings of 300$ USD. He needs to pay for transportation to and from Tegucigalpa which is about 50-75$ USD). He needs to pay to stay in the hospital, food, costs of the operation, and supplies of the operation. Right now, we think the cost of the operation will cost about 15,000-18,000 lempiras which is about 700$ USD. This does not include the cost of blood (you must buy your own blood in Honduras for operations), the hospital stay, and accommodations for family. I will continue to keep you updated on the outcome and costs of the operation. I will be collecting the money in my Canadian bank account and with the help of my parents, also Canadian Citizens and currently in Canada, we will wire the money to Luis and his family through Western Union in Honduras. Because I cannot personally travel to Tegucigalpa at the moment in order to give them the money. I have used Western Union already to send Luis and his family 300$ Canadian, and it is a very safe and reliable option. I have also used Western Union in the past to send and collect money.
I am hoping through your help we can raise a minimum of 1500$ to provide with the basic costs of the operation, transportation, and lodging.
