I would like to introduce you to the Fortin/Morin family. Pierre and Adriana with their two amazing children Maeva and Freddie. Freddie is a spunky 4 year old who was born with a cleft lip palate and has autism 3. He has seizure disorder/west syndrome and global developmental delay. Freddie has had several surgeries for his smile. They make many visits to their Sick Kids Hospital cleft teams in Toronto, along with speech and language pathologist appointments and occupational therapy.Maeva is a beautiful and brave 8 year old with autism 1 and ADHD. Her little brother's favorite person. This fall Maeva came down with pneumonia and during one of her many chest x-rays she was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis. Unfortunately, it is a fairly severe S curve, near the end of the bracing range, and surgery is imminent. She was referred to surgeons at CHEO's orthopedic clinic to begin Schroth therapy and bracing. She must wear a brace 22 hours a day. It's the beginning of a long journey for this young lady. This means many years of trips to Toronto for brace fittings and possible surgery. To add to everything this family faces on a daily basis, Pierre will be traveling to Hamilton next week for hip repair surgery (Arthroscopic femoroacetabular impingement repair). He has been out of work since October and is increasingly limited in what he can do physically. Adriana will need to take time off to care for Pierre in addition to the needs of the children. Pierre is looking at about a 6 month recovery with absolutely no weight bearing for 3 weeks followed by some strict limits and walking aids. Along with follow-ups in Hamilton and physiotherapy. We are hoping to raise funds to help this young family with some of the financial burden they are facing during this difficult time.
