Support the Mohr Family's Recovery Journey

Hello,

My name is Stephanie Kuertz and I am writing on behalf of my sister Desirae Mohr, and her family. They are unaware I am creating this on their behalf. Several people have reached out wanting to help the Mohr Family, and we wanted to create this to support them in their time of need.

Steve, Desi, and their three boys, were returning home Friday from their family vacation from Myrtle Beach when the unthinkable happened. About an hour into their car ride home, a car mistakenly pulled out in front of them, causing a head-on-collision they could not avoid.

Steve was pinned in the car and had to be cut out by his fellow firefighter brothers. While Desi, through sheer maternal adrenaline, kicked her own door out and proceeded to rip the doors off to get to her three sons. As a result, everyone thought Desi was fine until she collapsed on the way to the hospital watching over her youngest son in the ambulance.

Due to the accident, all five passengers in the car were admitted to the Florence, South Carolina hospital.

Desi, had to have emergency surgery to repair the internal bleeding within her stomach region. Thankfully because she was watching over her son in the ambulance, the medical team was able to identify the situation and rush her into operation. The doctors had to remove part of her small intestine, repair her liver, and in result received multiple blood transfusions to replenish her blood loss. She will be out of work for awhile to fully recover.

Steve, has several broken toes on one foot with lacerations to the bone. Once his surgery is completed to fix the cuts within his feet, it will be several months before he can walk or drive. His injuries will prevent him for working as a firefighter for quite some time, impacting their household income.

Their eldest son Cayden, received a grade 3 liver laceration, contusions on his lung, an acute kidney injury, and a broken arm in the accident. As a result, he needed surgery to stabilize his right arm and to release a nerve that was being pressed between the bones. He was excited to start school this fall focusing on graphic design and playing high school soccer. The doctors believe it will take six to eight months to fully recover.

At this time, the youngest boys have been released from the hospital and traveling home with family. Steve and Desi look to be released later this week and hoping their eldest can also be released. If not, he will have to fly home separately.

It is hard to put into words how undeserving this family is of this tragedy. Steve and Desi are exceptional parents that love their kids and their family immensely. We love Desi and the boys unannounced visits to our house to play with my girls and the gifts she brings. As she often states, “I didn’t get any girls, so now Auntie Des has to spoil yours.” Steve is a leader in the multiple firehouses that he works, and most of the conversations steers time spent with his firehouse brothers and sisters and runs gone on. The younger boys are heartbroken seeing their brother and parents in so much pain.

We received a picture today with the simple happiness that Steve and Desi were able to see each other for the first time since the accident.

It is hard to estimate a goal with the amount of uncertainties of what the insurance will cover and how long each Mohr’s healing process will take. If you’re unable to help at this time, please share with your friends and family in hopes to reach a broader audience. We greatly appreciate any help from you, your friends, your family, or anyone else in getting the financial support the Mohr family needs. We are currently setting up a meal program and will link the meal train when we have an update.

link for the meal train if you would like to send the family a meal!
