Support the Mitchum Family's Recovery from Helene
Donation protected
I am making this GoFundMe with the hope that we can raise enough money to help my family recover from Hurricane Helene.
• We are the Mitchum Family.
My name is Kristen (Gray) Mitchum and my husband's name is Brandon Mitchum.
• We have 4 children;
• 7 months old,
• 2 years old,
• 7 years old
• and 10 years old.
• We live in Asheville, NC, one of the hardest hit areas during Hurricane Helene.
• We have lost ALL of our income currently due to the hurricane.
• My husband is self employed and he lost many of his tools due to water damage.
• Many of our customers had to cancel or reschedule for many months later due to their own struggles due to the storm.
• Two of my children are special needs; their care is costly.
•
• We are trying to raise money to rebuild our life and our business.
•
• As well as to help our family stay afloat and have basic necessities due to the loss we've experienced from hurricane Helene.
•
• We have damage to our home as well as our vehicle.
•
• Our vehicle is now having mechanical issues as well as having minor cosmetic issues such as dents and scratches.
•
• FEMA won't help because our car wasn't totaled or what they consider severely damaged.
•
• We also DON’T have the money to pay the insurance deductible if we choose to have the cosmetic damage repaired that way.
•
• We still do NOT have clean water to our home.
•
• We are depending on our vehicle to get buckets of water for cleaning, cooking, dish washing, and showering.
• It has truly been a challenge for our large family.
• We have water and wind damage to property.
• We need several trees cut.
• Also a retaining wall to be fixed before I feel that our home will be completely safe for our children.
• The trees are at risk of falling on our home directly over where my children sleep.
• The retaining wall is at risk of a mudslide.
• We are also getting stuck in our driveway due to the gravel being washed out; the ground being so soft now.
• We are spending hours trying to dig our vehicle out.
• We had two FEMA inspectors get stuck as well as numerous contractors giving quotes on repairs for us.
• We have damage to our door and have it taped together.
• The frame is so water damaged that it just crumbles in my hand.
• We unfortunately did NOT have renters insurance and FEMA has NOT helped us at all.
•
• We are renting from relatives and they also were NOT able to qualify from help from FEMA for property damage.
• They were unaware that the home owners insurance policy had LAPSED just days before. They also did not have flood coverage anyways and we're told even if it hadn't lapsed they wouldn't have covered the damage.
• We are now two months behind (3 months on November 15th) on our bills including:
rent, lights, car payment and insurance.
• We had to spend ALL of our savings on hurricane supplies and hotels when we went more than 20 days without power and running water.
• We can still ONLY flush toliets with the city water because it is contaminated and brown.
• It would be even more devastating to lose our home and vehicle during this time.
• My relatives have worked with us but they have a mortgage to pay to the bank so they don't foreclose on the home.
• If you have the ability to donate, our family would be so grateful and thankful.
• We will continue to help our community through this and rebuild our lives one step at a time.
• This has truly been a devastating time for us.
• My main priority is to take care of my children the best way I can.
• I hate asking for help but we truly are in need at this time.
• Even though we are struggling, we are also blessed that things were not worse.
• Please pray for our family. If you don't pray send kind thoughts our way.
