On June 18th, Matthew Maloney suffered a tragic fall from a ladder that led to respiratory failure. After several weeks on a ventilator, our family made the incredibly difficult decision to transition him to comfort care. He passed away on July 16th, just two days after his 57th birthday.
We are raising funds to help cover the cost of medical bills, memorial services and support for the Maloney family. Matthew Maloney
July 14, 1968 – July 16, 2025
Matthew Maloney, 57, of Berkeley Heights, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, surrounded by his family. A beloved father, son, brother, and friend, Matthew left behind a legacy of strength, humor, and unwavering love.
Born on July 14, 1968, Matthew grew up in Scotch Plains, NJ, where his passion for sports and leadership shone from an early age. He was a tri-sport varsity athlete at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, proudly serving as captain of both the baseball and ice hockey teams. His athletic achievements continued at the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1991. As a standout third baseman, he held multiple baseball records—an enduring testament to his skill, drive, and determination.
After graduation, Matthew served his country with honor in Naval Intelligence, stationed in Pensacola, Florida. He brought the same discipline and focus to his service as he did to every part of his life. After completing his military service, he went on to build a successful career as a trader on the New York Stock Exchange, working at Merrill Lynch and later Credit Suisse. Sharp, driven, and deeply talented, he approached his work with ambition and integrity.
But beyond his accomplishments, Matthew will be most remembered for the way he made people feel. He was the kind of person who could light up a room with laughter—always ready with a quick-witted remark or a story that would have everyone laughing. His sense of humor, charm, and effortless storytelling brought joy to so many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was a devoted father to his three children, Will, Andrew, and Maggie Maloney—his greatest pride and joy. He also leaves behind his loving mother, Kathleen Maloney; his sister, Abby Urban; his cherished nieces, Jemma and Halsey Urban; and his daughter-in-law Toni; one grandchild, with another on the way. He is also remembered fondly by many extended family members and lifelong friends.
Matthew was predeceased by his father, Richard Maloney; step mother, Judy Maloney; his brother-in-law, Stanley Urban; his uncle William “Billy” Plummer; and his grandmother, lovingly known as “J.”
A private service will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family will gratefully accept donations to help cover funeral expenses.
Matthew’s strength, humor, and love for storytelling touched everyone lucky enough to know him. His legacy lives on in every laugh, every shared memory, and every life he helped shape along the way.
