"My mom was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.  She is now in Stage 4 (terminal) as it has metastasized to her bones, liver, uterus, and lymph nodes. 

My mom says her shining light and reason to live even a few more minutes longer here on Earth is for my son Everett.  She calls him her pride and joy.  We struggled for many years to have him and she says only being part of his life for 1 year isn't enough.

While taking the time off I've been able to help my mom with so many things.  Big things like driving to Stanford for all her appointments, holding her hand along the way during each blood draw, ultrasound, help communicate with her nurses and doctors, help get her prescriptions at the pharmacy to make sure she is comfortable and out of pain - to the little things like helping her pay bills, bathe, and do her laundry.

But most importantly, I've been able to spend quality time with her, something I wouldn't be able to get back.  I've enjoyed our snuggling on the couch, laughs over watching Everett do silly things, asking her how she makes all those yummy casseroles and her famous green beans, so one day I'll be able to teach Everett.  

I wish I qualified for FMLA so I didn't have to stress over having to pay bills and help provide for my family.  Losing my mom is stressful enough.  I am grateful that Dr. Fareid and the team have given me grace and allowed me to take time off unpaid and that I'll have a job to go back to.

The money will go towards bills and helping our family to be able to travel back and forth to Stanford."
