The Kemp Animal Sanctuary is housed at the Nettle Meadow Farm in Thurman, NY. We care for our retired milk-producing herd and rescue unwanted critters, including horses, highland cows, llamas, donkeys, pigs, and peacocks—over 140 animals total! It's been our philosophy since we began making cheese to care for our herd while producing milk and afterward to ensure they live their healthiest, happiest lives in comfort. We believe it’s the least we can do after all they have done to help create some of the best artisan cheese in the world.

As you can imagine, this “retirement program” is an expensive endeavor and has become even more so as the impacts of Covid and inflation have caused us to rescue more special needs animals (including dogs and cats) from around the Northeast. These animals often have significant medical complications requiring costly medications and veterinary care that their owners can no longer afford. Rising costs of grain, hay and medical care have severely impacted Nettle Meadow's profit margin, which, until now, has been the primary source of funding for the sanctuary.

It has become essential that we expand our reach, tell our story to the broader community, and turn to you--our friends--to help support our efforts. Gifts of all sizes matter, especially as nights get colder and needs increase for additional hay, blankets and grain to keep our critters safe and warm.
