Joslin and Ben Kanga and their three children, Anena, Okech, and Bethany, have built a life here in Dayton, Ohio, over the past eight years. Joslin is originally from Uganda, and Ben is from South Sudan. They met, married, started a family, and worked hard to create a life here. Ben is a truck driver, and Joslin is a home health care worker. Additionally, outside of their full-time work, both Joslin and Ben are the leaders of a small international church, All Nations Full Gospel Church, that especially ministers to recently arrived immigrant families.
After struggling with abdominal swelling for months, in February of this year, Ben was diagnosed with liver cancer and told that he must pursue an immediate liver transplant. Shortly afterward, Ben began to black out and collapse, making a return to his job impossible.
Overnight, the Kanga family was forced into a new reality. Joslin picked up an additional night job, Ben has applied for disability, and radiation treatments are starting as he waits for a liver transplant.
In the meantime, while the family has applied to all available resources, mortgage payments, insurance payments, and medical bills are quickly piling up. Their son, Okech, also has Type 1 diabetes, so the family has been paying for insurance out of pocket, now that they are no longer eligible through Ben’s work.
Please consider donating to this incredible family as they get on their feet again and Ben gets the medical care that he needs. Any little bit helps. As a family that has devoted their lives to serving others, it is now time that they receive crucial support during the hardest imaginable diagnosis.
