On what was meant to be a fun and memorable community event — the Grads vs. Parents Hockey Game at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena — our community witnessed something no one ever expected.
During the game, Jeff Johnson suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest on the ice.
In a matter of seconds, a joyful evening turned into a life-or-death emergency. Thanks to the immediate and heroic actions of bystanders at the arena, along with the swift response of firefighters and paramedics — and the urgent care provided at Nicola Valley Hospital — Jeff is still with us today. Their quick thinking and decisive intervention gave him a fighting chance. Now, he faces the battle of his life in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) at the Kelowna General Hospital.
Jeff is more than a husband, father, and friend. For nearly 20 years, he has served our community as a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the City of Merritt Fire Rescue Department. He has answered countless calls in the middle of the night, shown up when others were in crisis, and put his own safety aside to protect his neighbours. Jeff has always been someone Merritt could count on.
Now, he needs us.
As Jeff undergoes intensive medical care and begins what will be a long and uncertain road to recovery, his family is facing profound emotional and financial strain. Extended time away from work, mounting travel expenses, the cost of critical medical treatments, and the weight of everyday household bills will quickly become overwhelming. During this incredibly difficult time, their focus needs to remain on Jeff’s healing — not the growing financial pressure surrounding them.
This is our opportunity to give back to a man who has given so much to all of us — and to stand beside the people who mean the most to him.
Let’s rally around Stephanie, Madison, and Athyn the way Jeff has always rallied around his community. Every donation — big or small — will help ease the financial burden and allow them to focus on what truly matters: Jeff’s recovery and being together during this critical time.
If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this page and keeping the Johnson Family in your thoughts and prayers.
