On the morning of Monday, August 25th, 2025, the Johnson family's life was turned upside down.

Mekos Johnson—a devoted father of five and the sole provider for his family—was driving three of his children to school when tragedy struck. A driver crossed the divider on US-41 near Oil Well Road and hit their van head-on. The impact was catastrophic. The van flipped multiple times, and emergency crews from Charlotte County Fire and EMS rushed to the scene.

Mekos was trapped inside and had to be extricated by Engine 5 and Rescue 5. He was airlifted by MEDEVAC to Gulf Coast Medical Center with serious injuries. His children were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Miraculously, seatbelts saved their lives—but they suffered bruises, cuts from shattered glass, and one child, the only boy in the family, was transferred to All Children’s Hospital for severe abdominal pain.

This accident has left the Johnson family reeling—emotionally, physically, and financially. Mekos faces a long road to recovery, including surgeries, rehabilitation, and time away from work. The medical bills, therapy costs, and everyday expenses are mounting quickly.
