Hi, I'm Malachi Smith, an award-winning Jamaican Dub Poet who has traveled the world performing and giving workshops that introduce our unique art form and develop talent. The Jamaican Poets Nomadic School Tour began with the vision of one poet. That poet is me.
In 2017, I felt the urge to give back to Jamaican students by doing a poetry tour at schools and colleges across the island. Since then, it has grown to over 30 poets making appearances and working with young and aspiring poets while encouraging and sharing talent. In conjunction with the Department of Literature in English of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, a free workshop is also held to help aspiring poets improve their poetry writing skills. Due to the covid pandemic, we could not host a tour in 2020 or 2021.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE DONATE! Plans are underway for the 2022 tour to be held during the first two weeks of November. Sponsorship funding is very scarce, and the cost of transportation, accommodation and meals has become too expensive to manage on our own.
The work of the tour is crucial in this time of rising crime and indiscipline in Jamaican society. Our youth need every avenue to express themselves in productive and non-violent ways. Poetry is one of those avenues.
Please help us to make this year's tour a reality! Poets are the conscience of a people. Poetry teaches our children a better, more productive way of expressing themselves, dealing with their pain and can be healing. As poets, this is our mission. PLEASE DONATE AND HELP US TO FULFIL THAT MISSION!
