Amidst the growing concerns and threats posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the iO Theater has been forced to shut its doors and cancel all classes and performances for at least two weeks. The safety of our performers and patrons is of the utmost importance to us and while cancelling all performances was not an easy choice, we knew it was the right thing to do. The hardest part of the decision comes with the realization that our amazing, hardworking staff will be without work for the near future and it pains us that we are limited in our ability to ease their strain in this confusing and trying time.
It is no coincidence that after each show we try to introduce the "hardest working people in the room,": our piano players, our techs, servers, hosts, bartenders, not to mention our teachers, box office staff, our kitchen staff, food runners, training center, and janitorial staff. Some of these employees have been with iO for almost the entire 40 year history of the theater, others only a couple weeks, but without these people, iO would never be the special place that it has become. It is our daily staff that works so hard to make people feel safe, welcome, and respected at our theater. So I now ask that if you've ever seen a show, or performed in a show, or taken a class, to donate what you can so that we can continue to support the amazing workers that supports our theater every single night. 100% of the money raised here will be split amongst hourly iO staff. As the person who typically handles HR processes at iO, I personally retain full responsibility for ensuring these funds get distributed evenly and in a timely fashion.
