Hi, my name is Lisa Gibbons, and I’m the founder of The Independent Nurse, a small CQC-registered nursing service in Bristol.

I became a nurse because of a clear calling from God. When I was 18, during an operation, I experienced a life-threatening reaction to medication. In that moment, I had a vision where God told me He needed me to be a nurse. Before that, I had no direction in life, but that moment changed everything.

After several confirmations, I applied to nursing school even though I didn’t have the required grades in every subject. By a miracle, I was accepted. Two months later, I survived a serious accident that only strengthened my resolve to serve. On my first NHS shift, I sat in the hospital chapel and dedicated my entire nursing career to God.

After 15 years in the NHS, I reached a point where I could no longer fulfil my calling in the way I believed God intended, with time, compassion, advocacy, and prayer. So, after much prayer and a 7-month process with the CQC, I became one of very few nurses in the UK registered as an independent healthcare provider.

I started with one small advert and began seeing patients with chronic wounds that hadn’t healed for years. Many of them healed completely. I prayed for my patients, offered them dignity and love, and saw the difference it made, physically and spiritually.

As the work grew, I rented a small room in a church community centre. On my first day, I sat in its chapel and dedicated this new chapter to God. Three years later, The Independent Nurse has grown to a small team of four, three clinic rooms, and thousands of patients cared for and seen hope restored in people’s lives.

This year has been one of the hardest seasons yet, personally and financially. Despite strong growth and excellent outcomes, a series of challenges left us struggling to keep up with costs. We’re asking for a small boost to help us rebuild, secure our clinic space, and continue serving the people who fall through the gaps in current healthcare services.
