The Hann Family continues to walk a road no family should ever have to travel — especially not twice. Their daughter, Grace, has endured more in her young life than many of us will face in a lifetime. And yet, if you see her in the hallway or at school, you would never know the weight she carries. She wears a smile that lights up a room, a quiet strength that humbles you, and a resilience that can only be described as extraordinary. Grace is a warrior in every sense of the word. Even while facing treatments, procedures, hospital stays, and unimaginable uncertainty, she continues to show up with courage. She is a voracious reader, determined and bright. I had the incredible privilege of celebrating her achievement as the only student at Mary Giella to read all of the Sunshine State Readers. We marked that milestone by releasing butterflies we had watched metamorphose in the library — a moment that felt so symbolic of Grace herself: growth, transformation, beauty, and hope even after struggle.
Cyndy and Bill are the kind of parents and educators who give endlessly. They show up for their students, for their colleagues, and for their community — even while quietly carrying the weight of their own family’s battle. This year, as Grace’s cancer has returned, they once again face the painful reality of choosing who will be at the hospital, who will be at work, and how to hold everything together. The decisions they make daily are ones no parent should have to make. As educators, we pour our hearts into our “kiddos,” and they become part of our lives. I cannot imagine the ache of watching your own child endure cancer again while still trying to serve and care for others.
The Hann Clan gives so much to everyone around them, and now they need us. My one wish this year is simple: that this beautiful family can experience days free from fear, free from constant medical decisions, free from the heavy burden they carry.
