As some of you may know, my daughter, Adrianna Martinez, was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 months ago and is receiving treatment from MD Anderson. But our family story does not begin nor end there….
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 40 years ago at the age of 48 and passed away 4 years later. My sister, Mary Longoria, was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, in October of 2021 and succumbed to it 6 months later. Upon my return home and still grieving the loss of my sister, our family received the news that my husband, Gary, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately, it was caught early enough and the surgical removal of the prostate gland deemed him cancer-free.
In April, due to an ongoing cough and declining health, he sought care at the ER. A chest x-ray showed a large mass in his right lung suspicious for a malignancy. Fast forward to his initial visit with MD Anderson a week ago, he was admitted. This week has been an array of diagnostic tests, MRI’s, scans, and lab work-ups. Today’s PET scan confirmed a diagnosis of Stage IV Adenocarcinoma of the lung (non-small cell) that has metastasized. Gary remains hospitalized and had his first chemotherapy treatment today.
We don’t know what the future holds for the Guzman family other than mounting medical bills and out of pocket expenses that aren’t covered by health insurance. It’s difficult to ask for assistance during this unimaginable time in our lives. We are still trying to comprehend and cope with the devastating news. However, we will fight both battles with all that we have! Thank you for all the prayers, love, and support from family and friends, you don’t know how much it is appreciated❤️.
