This fundraiser is being started on behalf of the Gunlik family in Kipnuk, Alaska. On October 12, they were the victims of Typhoon Halong. It has been an unimaginable loss and very traumatic. With evacuations underway, some family members have decided to move to Bethel, while others are planning to move near family in Palmer.

This fundraiser will directly fund the Gunlik family; 8 different houses: “My cousin Lacey, her husband and 3 kids, my parents and my sister and 2 kids, my uncle who lives alone, my other uncle who lives with his girlfriend and baby, my sister and her 3 kids, my cousin and his 2 youngest kids, my cousin who lives with my aunt and her son. My cousin Paulson and his wife and 2 kids”

Several homes were swept off their foundations. One family floated inside their home several miles from the village and at this time, with winter quickly approaching, it is not realistic to plan to winter in Kipnuk.

We are asking for 6 months of housing to get the family on their feet. The unexpected relocation is incredibly overwhelming. As the family works through these day-by-day struggles, having secure housing would be invaluable.

My personal connection to the Gunliks is through Andyn Gunlik, our Yup’ik teacher in Igiugig. She has been the sole fluent first language speaker in our community for several years, guiding our youth and adults to speak our language. She has shared stories of her gran and uncles during hunting seasons, inspiring us to continue our way of life. Her role in Igiugig has been monumental, as we pursue relearning our Indigenous languages, and I’m hoping we can all help her family as graciously as their family is sharing knowledge with us.

from Paul: Man. Kipnuk. All the people we associated with. All the nice smiles, waving at eachother while passing on the boardwalks. Having a small conversation while in line at the store or post office. Maqiing with my dad, brother, brother in law, nephews and uncles and friends! Man. My children’s safe place, our home and new house (parent’s new house) Feels as if it’s all gone. Please say a prayer for us. It’s a grieving situation. It feels as if we’re being separated. Confusing situation. Mass evacuation has started in kipnuk today. God has a different plan and I believe it.

I’m so thankful for my whole family, my sisters welcoming us. My cousin starting donations. My parents and I try to give you those who need. Today, we’re getting things we need and it feels weird. Quyana cakneq all!
