From celebrating a long hoped for miracle pregnancy, to just weeks later facing one of the most aggressive and rare forms of thyroid cancer. Cancer Sucks.
Meet Cortney and Chase Gruver. Married for 11 years, they've built a beautiful family of 5 with one more on the way. Their oldest, Ty, is twelve. Before Cortney and Chase were married, Ty's biological father chose to leave his and Cortneys life at birth. A few months later Chase came into the picture and has been more than we could have ever asked for from day one. He adopted Ty and together welcomed two daughters, and now will be adding this amazing miracle baby that's on it's way.
After years of hoping and trying for another child, they were surprised and excited to learn in late September that they were expecting once again!
Just weeks later, everything changed.
In mid October, Chase found a lump in his neck. After emergency surgery revealed the worst: Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer, an extremely aggressive and rare form of Thyroid Cancer. Statistics say that 4% of patients survive longer than six months after receiving this diagnosis. Still we are praying for miracles.
A week later he visited the ER again struggling to breathe and coughing up blood. They found a second mass quickly growing, this time inoperable, further down in his throat that is large enough it's restricting his airway. Doctors performed another emergency surgery giving him a tracheotomy so he could breathe.
His body doesn't have the marker needed for chemotherapy to work. Immunotherapy is now the only treatment option which from most reports, even if it works this cancer diagnosis remains terminal. As I write this, Chase is still in the ICU, unable to speak, and learning how to navigate life with a trach. The future is uncertain and frightening for Chase and for his family, not to mention the financial burden. Unfortunately, Chase does not have any life insurance.
Chase, a Master Plumber, is now unable to work for the foreseeable future. Cortney works at the elementary school and is trying to juggle time at the hospital with Chase, their families income, her new pregnancy, and raising their children. All during what should have been a happy and joyful season.
The family is overwhelmed and exhausted doing everything they can to stay afloat. Anyone who knows Chase will tell you how Jolly, Loving, and an amazing man he is. This time of year he's always been one of Santas best helpers. These things always happen to the good ones.
They desperately need help, hope, and support during this unimaginable chapter of their lives.
