For those of you lucky enough to know Jerome and DeeAnn Goette, know that they are parents of 2 great kids and their spouses and 6 grandkids. They both work hard and would give the shirt off their backs to anyone that needed it and right now they need our "shirts." On September 5th 2021 Jerome and Dee tested positive for Covid-19. While DeeAnn continued to improve, Jerome was struggling. On September 17, Jerome went into the ER and they diagnosed him with double pneumonia and he also had several small blood clots in his lungs. They admitted him into the Austin hospital but on September 19th, Jerome took a turn for the worse and needed to be intubated. After being intubated, Jerome was airlifted to Rochester where he remains in ICU today. Jerome made small steps in the right direction, even being extubated at one point, but after about 10 hours, he rapidly declined and ended up needing to be intubated again. At that time the doctors decided it might be best to intubate him through a trach, so that was done on September 27th. Because of being intubated this way Jerome is able to be awake more and has been taking a lot of baby steps forward since then. He has been able to sit in a chair for a short amount of time, he has had a few popsicles and even drank some Pepsi. While Jerome is taking small strides forward he still has a very long road ahead of him. At one point Dee and Rachelle were told that for every day Jerome is in ICU it takes 7 days to regain that strength back and according to Rachelle's updates, today, October 1, 2021, would be day 16, that's at least 112 days of recovery. At this point, they don't know what recovery will look like for Jerome. He will still be in the hospital for quite some time and even when he goes home there will be doctor's visits and physical therapy and other accommodations may need to be considered once he is home. Right now DeeAnn is off of work from MCHS Albert Lea where she is an eye technician so she can be there for Jerome and she will need to continue to be off when he comes home so she can help him. They will have a lot of medical bills coming in on top of their regular bills and not a lot of income at this time. We have all wanted to help during this difficult time and this would be a small way we can all show our love and support.
